The study aimed to (1) study beliefs, its history of the creation, to (2) explore its influence, and to (3) investigate its values with qualitative method focusing on the interview. In the study 6 experts of Phayao Phrakruangyodkhunphon were informants.
The study revealed the following findings:
With regard to beliefs and history, after the construction of the Buddha image, various types of small Buddha image were successively made. Buddha images used as amulet are small Buddha statutes that are consecrated via the holy ceremony with various kinds of mantras and magic on which belief in the creation of small Buddha statutes as amulet is based with the purpose of creation as a memorial to respect Buddhist significant sites, to prolong Buddhism, to dedicate merits the deceased, and to make it as an image of reverence or an image of story.
The small Buddha image as amulets is made due to the faith of Buddhists who need spiritual refuge. Archaeological evidence revealed the discovery of Buddha in the Amaravati period (Indian Arts During the 7th-9th century).When the Buddha image was created, subsequently, small Buddha images as amulets were made. The Buddha image as an amulet is a small Buddha image that can be carried. Through the ceremony to chant down the character of various spells, the belief in the creation of amulets is formed as a memorial to worship the land of Buddhism to prolong the age of religion, to dedicate merits to the deceased, and as an image or an image of storytelling.
The Phayao Phrakruangyodkhunphon is believed to have influence as an amulet because one can carry and it can support the possessor with the Buddha’s grace in supporting one with great power, invulnerability and fertility, as the object of worship associating with Buddhist art for more than 500 years of creation. Phrakruangyodkhunphon is not too big for carrying and Phrakruangyodkhunphon Buddha images were consecrated at the same time with Phachaotonluang Buddha image. Phrakruangyodkhunphon was made of clay, bronze and lead with the power the Buddha’s grace, and lastly as the Buddhists’ spiritual refuge , it is powerful, invulnerable, and supporting the possessors.
Phrakruangyodkhunphon has its value with a feeling of mental refuge with a sense of awareness of the occupants. It is regarded as the reminder for wholesome deeds whereas aspect of the Buddhist art indicates the Buddha image in subduing Mara (Evil) posture and meditation attitude in upside down bell shape with delicately beautiful art along with the economic value with price amount 15,000-60,000 Baht in Phayao and Lanna region.
