Abstract

 

ABSTRACT

 

              The research study is of three objectives : (1) to study leadership of the abbots in Kamphaengsaen District, Nakhon Pathom Province, (2) to compare the opinion of monks towards the leaderships of abbots in Kamphaengsaen District, NakhonPathom Province, classified by the qualifications, and (3) to study the problems, obstacles and suggestions to improve the leadership skills of the abbots in Kamphaengsaen District, Nakhon Pathom Province, from the monks opined. The survey research was  conducted with monks ranging to 259 in number in Kampaengsaen District. The questionnaires consisted of personal data of the respondents, the level of opinions of monks towards the leadership of the abbots in Kamphaengsaen District, and the recommendation to solve the problems of those abbots. Data was analyzed and summarized by using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA and comparing treatment group means by least significant difference (LSD) method.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The research findings are as following:

 

            1. The view of monks towards the leadership of the abbots in Kamphaengsaen District, NakhonPathom Provinces, revealed the high level with mean ratings of 3.81.  A ranking of means revealed that the monks gave the highest satisfied ratings to the management of education and training with mean ratings of 3.91, followed by administration of personnel with mean ratings of 3.85, leadership competence with mean ratings of 3.84, leadership capabilities and skills with mean ratings of 3.78, management of religious maintenance performing with mean ratings of 3.77, performing religious ceremonies with mean ratings of 3.76 and personnel administration with means rating of 3.70.

 

            2. On the leadership of the abbots in the said area classified by the qualifications, the mean satisfaction level towards the leadership was not significantly different though there were different in years of age, experience, formal education, and ecclesiastical education of those monks. Therefore, the test of significance rejected null hypothesis, while the differences in dharma practices and positions of them revealed that the mean satisfaction level was significantly different, thus accepting the null hypothesis.

             

              3. The main problems of the said abbots are the limitation concerned on the development of the temple and nearby communities. Most of them have followed the traditional approach including the organization of temple-based ceremonies, lack of community participation, ineffective communication caused the shortage of real time information and lack of understanding on the problems, development inefficiency due to the poor community relation. They have no any policy and plans in advance leading to  the goals. The approach of each temple was rather scattered and lack of coordination of the network, especially, the shortage of experienced and competent monks in the field of development.
