The objectives of this thesis are (1) to study the concept of the perfection on self-determination in Theravada Buddhist scripture, (2) to study the practicing of the perfection on self-determination in Theravada Buddhism, and (3) to propose the ways for the application of the perfection on self-determination (Adhitthanaparami) in the development of life quality.
Practicing Adhitthanaparami which persists in taking upon oneself means upholding for any condition or manners. In characteristics of persisting and calming, these are a foundation to be a Buddha. Parami consists of three steps: Parami has always to do virtue when people are born, Upaparami means a high reputation which is giving rise to virtues, and Paramatthaparami is a highest step for achieving Summum Bonum. The perfection on self-determination (Adhitthanaparami) is the foundation of making a virtue.
According to practicing Adhitthanaparami, it was found that in the past there were many Jakatas concerning Bodhisattvas’ cultivation of Perfections. While practicing perfection, Bodhisattva practiced Adhitthanaparami in order to support other Perfections as well.
Classifying steps of practicing Adhitthanaparami indicates a level of getting promotion of benefit. It starts from Parami foundation until the highest level in the ten perfections stages. Each step of practicing Adhitthanaparami consists of 3 steps as follows:
1. Parami (perfections) 2. Upaparami (superior perfections) and 3. Paramatthaparami (supreme perfections)
Adhitthanaparami concept can be used for developing life quality and for applying for solving problems in education, social and economics in Thai society.
From the result of this research, it was found that the concept of practicing Adhitthanaparami is a principle of virtue in Buddhism. Parami (perfection) is one out of practicing Perfections 10. Therefore, Adhitthanaparami is one of performing meritorious acts for people who want to reach the highest enlightenment. The word “Adhitthanaparami” means persisting in taking upon oneself and upholding for any condition or manners by conducting compassion and proficiency as to the means of success.
