A Comparative Study of The Concepts of Insight Knowledge in theravada Buddhist Philosophy and Intuition of Osho 2010

Abstract

              This thesis aims at a study of Visspassanãñana or insight knowledge in Theravada Buddhist Philosophy and the concept of Osho’s intuition and makes a comparative study on the similarity and dissimilarity. The study can be summarized as follows.

             

            According to the Theravada Buddhist Philosophy, the word “Visspassanãñana” means the wisdom enlighten in the Five Aggregates or seeing the stage of the rising and extinguishing of corporeality and immateriality. It is recognized that they were governed by the law of the Three Characteristics; rising, remaining and extinguishing. The path to develop Visspassanãñana or insight knowledge is to practice the Four Foundations of mindfulness or Satipatthãna Sutta,the Five Strengths or pañca bala and the Threefold Training or sikkhā for attending to the liberation or free from defilements, craving and attachment.

            According to Osho’s philosophical ideal, the word “intuition” means the knowledge and understanding that occurs from the direct inner experience, the state of super conscious and being the élan vital.    The path to attain intuition is to concentrate of one’s mind, living in the present moment and non craving for various emotions.

          The similarities of the two philosophical view-points are that 1) the both mentioned that the knowledge came from the direct inner experience without reasoning.    2) In term of the source of knowledge, the knowledge came from the pure feeling. 3) In term of the characteristic, intuition is the state of super conscious or it is beyond conventional truth. 4) In term of the cognitive processes, the both views focused on consciousness. 5) In term of aim, the both views focused on the freedom of mind.  

              The study found the dissimilarities of both philosophical views as follows. 1) In term of meanings, Osho has mentioned that intuition came from the innermost core but the Visspassanãñana or insight knowledge was the enlightenment in mind and body or the seeing and understanding of the impermanence, suffering and non self. 2) In term of source of the intuition knowledge, the Theravada Buddhist Philosophy described that the insight knowledge or Visspassanãñana is arisen by seeing and understanding all aggregates as they really are. 3) In term of the characteristic of intuition, the intuition was the absolute in itself but the insight knowledge or Visspassanãñana was the knowledge of contemplation on rising and falling. 4) In term of cognitive processes, intuition came from consciousness or knowing with oneself and displayed by instinct until the emotional awareness and the non craving for anything developed into oneself then the intuition will be appeared. According to Theravada Buddhist philosophy, the contemplation on mind and body by means of right understanding and the wholesome emotion in order to attend the Visspassanãñana or insight knowledge is to see things as they really are until develop to the liberation. 5) In term of aims, Osho’s liberation represented the empty mind without the bondage of thought and leaded to the essence of mind called the intuition. According to Theravada Buddhist philosophy, the liberation focused on the cessation of defilements and attended to Nibbana or become the noble individual.
