The main objectives of this research were i) to study the concepts of the efficiency of temple management; ii)  to study the efficiency of temple management of abbots in Thonburi District, Bangkok; and iii) to study the problems and suggestions of the efficiency of Temple management of the abbots in Thonburi District, Bangkok.  The survey research was carried out in this study.

A group of samples for this research consisted of 214 Buddhist monks who lived in 34 temples under Mahanikaya sect in Thonburi District, Bangkok, being drawn by simple random sampling technique.  The tool for data collection in this research was questionnaire comprising check-list, rating scale and opened end questions with reliability value equal to 0.914. The programme for social science research was employed for data analysis. The statistics used for it are frequencies, percentage, average means and standard deviation. The content analysis technique was used for analyzing data from open-ended questions.

Results of Research were concluded as follows:

The administration was important aspect for temple management being developed as systematic means to support Buddhist monks and novices to have capabilities and experiences, behaved themselves in the framework of Dhammavinaya and were good models for the development of the community. The present temple management had transformed pattern, model, system and means suitable to nearby communities and social contexts which were consistent with the policies and objectives of organization.

The overall efficiency of Temple management of the abbots in Thonburi District, Bangkok were found at high level ( =3.62). Having considered by each aspect, it was also rated at the high levels in administrative, social welfare education and building construction aspects, whereas others such as religious studies, propagation and welfare services were noted at moderate levels.

          With regard to the problems and suggestions of the efficiency of Temple management of the abbots in Thonburi District, Bangkok, it was found that there were no clear visions, goals of some abbots’ temple management, no concrete meeting, planning and formulating objectives of temple development, the ever practiced temple management was carried out, no coordination among temples, villages and communities, and some abbots put the wrong men on the wrong jobs resulting in decrease of efficiency. The suggestions for the improvement of temple management were that there should organized the regular meeting among monks and novices in the temple in order to increase the efficiency of temple management and harmony, the abbots should have opportunities and welcome new ideas and knowledge to apply for temple management, new technology should be used, and creative activities among temple, villages and communities should be organized
