The objectives of this research were to study background of Isan Kalam, meaning, essence and types of Kalam, and to interpret Isan Kalam in Buddhist ethics perspectives.
The findings are as;
(1) Isan Kalam is a rule or taboo discourse of society, which is the practical guide both in individual and common for living together. It is the formative order of Isan people. It is strategically local wisdom by referring to holy things for defending people from not making something wrong and making wellbeing and harmony society. The types of Kalam which are divided by human behavior conclude in threefold such as the General Kalam, the Self Kalam, and the Other Kalam.
(2) When interpreted Isan Kalam in Buddhist ethics perspectives, most of Isan Kalam was found with Buddhist ethics perspectives. Although there are multi-perspectives, levels of Buddhist ethics, i.e., five precepts, ten wholesome Virtues and eight-fold Path were overlapping in each Kalam. It is found that Isan Kalam was integrated any ethics concepts to be smoothly practical discourse and use to teach and remind the rule of society. It can make wellbeing and harmony society for Isan people.
