Abstract

This research aims to study the belief of funeral ritual of Buddhist people in Lanna and to study the concept of cultural belief of a corpse’s castle making of Buddhist people in Lanna. The data obtained were analyzed in descriptive.

                At the Buddha era, the belief of funeral ceremony is found that the Indian performed a funeral ceremony into three types: cremation of corpses, burying of corpses, and leaving of corpses.

                The Belief of the funeral rites of the Buddhist people in Lanna are found that there are two types of funeral rites are: the bodies of people who die naturally, the funeral ceremony of cremation will be held step by step. But the bodies of people who die accidently, the funeral ceremony of burying will be held without any religious ceremony.

                History of the corpse’s castle making of the Buddhist people in Lanna is found that the corpse’s castle is based on the human faith in which comes from Buddhism and Brahmanism. That is SumeruMountain of the central axis of the universe in the Brahmanism. But in Buddhism is associated with the ecclesiastical rituals. However, the corpse’s castle making is not clear when it was initiated. But the evidence from ancient chronicles Yonok found that the use of movable throne is the prototype of the corpse’s castle at the present. It began at the end of the dynasty Mangrai who had ruled Chiang Mai.

                The cultural concepts of corpse’s castle making of Buddhist Lanna people found that at the beginning the funeral was organized by relatives, friends, villagers and local communities. But later it become the funeral business, such as sale coffin, sale corpse’s castles, sale wreath, business of cremation and the business and management of the funeral rites of the Lanna culture in modern society. Generally there is still a trend to develop its model, competition, challenge, foreshortening and do not dare to deny the norms or old traditions in which is character of values of using the corpse’s castle and dragging the corpse’s castle remains in a ceremony of cremation as well as a offering the house or Tan Huen Phi for dead until today.

                The Cultural beliefs of a corpse’s castle making of Buddhist people in Lanna especially the heritage of knowledge of local wisdom becomes a culture of Lanna people dating from the past to the present. In the part of gratitude, the cultural beliefs of Buddhist people in Lanna are based on the principles of Buddhism.

                In the part of praising, when their relatives alive, they express gratitude to them, but their relatives whenever pass away, they perform the praising to them. The culture of funeral ceremony of Lanna people is deeply rooted in the way of life for hundreds of years. When people are dead, they held the funeral ceremony in order to mourn the dead with the best. The funeral ceremony of Lanna people is different from other regions. That is the decoration of the corpse’s castle with fresh or dried flowers to look beautiful. This symbol means to honor the dead in order to send them to heavenly world.
