An Analytical Study of the Conflict of Interests and the Adinnādāna Precept in Theravāda Buddhism 2010

Abstract

The objectives of this research are (1) to study the conflict of interests in present societies and in Buddhism (2) to study the conflict of interests and the adinnādāna precept in Buddhism and (3) to study the way to solve the conflict of interests according to the Buddhist principles. This research is conducted in the documentary terms. The data are  collected from the Tipitaka as well as the commentary, the literature and the related documents, then are analyzed in the research principles and are presented in a descriptive study.

                  From this research, it is found that the conflict of social and legal interests is of a broader scope of behaviour than corruption. The conflict of interests in present societies are involved in the problems of  three categories : (1) The corruption, (2) The corruption in Policy Maker, and (3) The wrong behaviour. Furthermore, the conflict of interests in Buddhism are involved in the problems of two levels (1) the conflicts in terms of precepts that are the conflicts in the behaviour of private interests that is not incompliance with the Buddhist precepts and (2) the conflicts in terms of virtues are related to the material things or acquisition.

The issues conecting with the conflict of interests and adinnādāna precept which a really wrong intention behind the action of a person and the result of damaged or defective property in any way. Therefore, the offense under any element of the adinnādāna precept is a part of the conflict of interests, but the conflict of interests is of a broader scope than the adinnādāna precept.

In conclusion, this research indicates that there are two ways to resolve the conflict of interests in Buddhism which are (1) the improving of the human virtues to help the people to have good behaviour, good quality of life, and good self-consciousness and (2) the improving the discipline such as the analysis and the improve of evaluation criteria on the conflict of interests and adinnādāna precept to be in compliance with the disciplines and the laws.
