Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the theory behind the Practices of Yonisomanasikāra, in order to attain an understanding (called in Pāli SutamayapaÑÑā), then bring it to practicing in the frame of Satipatthāna (Mindfulness Foundations).

The goal of the Buddha’s teaching is the cessation of suffering (dukkha), attained principally by following the Eightfold Path, whose first member is Sammāsitthi, or Right view.
The Pāli Canon says that Sammāsitthi can be caused to arise through Paratoghosa (the voice of another) and Yonisomanasikāra, paying correct attention.
Moreover, although the Pāli Canon records countless occasions upon which the Buddha extolled the virtues of Youisomanasikāra and its essential role in attaining the Buddhist goal, the cessation of dukkha, it is nowhere fully explained and, for this reason perhaps, tends these days to be neglected, of overlooked, in most of the meditation techniques commonly current.
The aim of this thesis is explore the topic of Yonisomanasikāra and its role in the Buddhist path, as advocated by Ajahn Pranee Samreungraja, a lay meditation teacher at the centre she established at Wat Khaosnamchai in Hua Him province, Thailand.
