Abstract

This research’s objectives are 1) To study the present communication of Generation Y 2) To study Buddhist communication of the Noble Eightfold Path  and 3) To apply Buddhist communication of the Noble Eightfold Path for Generation Y.  This work is the qualitative research on documentation and field study, collecting data with the in-depth interview of the target groups, i.e. 10 persons of Generation Y, 2 persons of the experts in Buddhism and 5 persons of the ones associate with Generation Y in daily life to come up with the dhamma method of communication for Generation Y at present time.

The results show that Generation Y has been an essential group of people in the society from past until present.  Now it is the globalization era where Generation Y tends to extremely indulge themselves with material.  Because Generation Y is addicted to on-line communication without the digital literacy skill, therefore the society is at risk of the inappropriate technology usage.  It is necessary to find the way to cultivate wisdom for Generation Y to be able to live in the middle path.

Buddhist communication for Generation Y In Buddha’s time, the Buddha is the Sender, the Message is the Four Noble Truths, i.e. Suffering, Cause of Suffering, Cessation of Suffering and the Path leading to the Cessation of Suffering which is the Noble Eightfold Path consist of the Right Understanding, the Right Thought, the Right Speech, the Right Action, the Right Livelihood, the Right Effort, the Right Mindfulness, and the Right Concentration.  The Noble Eightfold Path is called Majjhimapatipada which can be summarized in Tisikkha: the Threefold Training simply called morality, concentration and wisdom.  The Buddha used as the Channel in his expositions; the lecture, conversation, question & answer and the Receivers are the disciples.

The Buddhist communication of the Noble Eightfold Path  for Generation Y should be the two-way communication integrating other sciences to form the practical communication enabling Generation Y to be creative and can apply in their daily lives because the path leading to the cessation of suffering is the way of life embracing morality and benefiting to the person. With the method of the Middle Path Communication comprising the key components, i.e. Sender, Message, Channel, Receiver through digital media blend in with the Majjhimapatipada principle incorporated with the digital literacy skill enhancing the more effective and efficient communication.  It explains the communication process and dhamma of the Buddha simultaneously therefore, it is the method integrating the Nobel Eightfold Path in the form of morality, concentration and wisdom.
