The thesis entitled “An Analytical Study of Love in Albert Camus’s Perspective” consists of two objectives as: (1) to study the concept of love in western philosophy and (2) to analyze the concept of love in Albert Camus’s perspective. The methodology used is documentary research through 12 pieces of Camus’s works.
The study shows that the concept of love in western philosophy, love in Greek era, it referred to the love of wisdom or it was called philia and agape. Regarding the love in the middle age, it referred to relationship between God and man, which was developed by the Greek’s idea or agape. In the renaissance, Human beings are aware of the reasons that exist in human beings, so they have a love for human beings. In the modern era, there was the diversity of philosophical concepts of love such as the universal ethics, human being, will to live and the unity etc.
Regarding the love in Albert Camus’s perspective, it can be divided into 5 forms. (1) Love in the nature, it is the relationship between man and nature, which will contribute to the understanding of the human and to become one with nature. (2) Love in society and politics, it means rebellion against social and political norms that deprive individual liberty. (3) It is the love in family, for Camus, family is the school of the passion of living. (4) Love in friendship, it comes from the understanding of love in nature, so it truly understands the value of all life. (5) The love in female as lovers and friends. This kind of love should be followed the individual passion and respect for their own freedom.
