This thesis is of three objectives: 1) to study the malice based on the Buddhist perspective, 2) to explore Queen Māgandiyā’s historical background and her malice and 3) to analyze the hatred of Queen MāgandiyāAccording to the Buddhist doctrines, the term ‘Āghāta or malice’ refers to striking or killing. It is the nature of hurtfulness that caused by the unwholesome roots viz., Lobha: greed, Dosa: hatred and Moha: delusion. A hurtful person always performs evil conducts i.e. misconduct by body, by speech andby mind, which are the causes of the hatred.
In regard to Queen Māgandiyā, she was a beautiful daughter of Brahmin Māgandiya ofKuru City. She was a secondary queen consort of King Udena andSāmāvatī was the principal consort. Once, the Buddha rejected her father's offer of marriage with her. Therefore, shewas incensed against the Buddha and His followers. However, she cannot harm the Buddha and his disciples. So she turned out to hurt Sāmāvatī and her companies. She had changed by the power of hatred. Queen Māgandiyā’s malice was occurred by two factors, that is to say, the internal factor of the intrinsic nature of a person. She was a lustful, hating, deluded andspeculativetemperament as her characteristic behavior. These were the foundations of her malice that brings to an arrogant person and savage. In term of external factors,it is derived from foster care and she did do not understand the teachings of the Buddha. Therefore, the result of the malice was made Queen Sāmāvatī and her companies’ death.
The impact of malice made Queen Māgandiyā become a savage and it directly affected to herself by living unhappily and her next life was fallen into the woeful state. The death of Sāmāvatī and her companieshad shocked the people and Venerable Ananda, because they used to support Buddhism.
