AN INTEGRATION OF MINDFULNESS ON DEATH IN THE PROCESS OF THE RESCUE AND PUBLIC RELIEF DISASTER

Abstract

The thesis entitled “Integrated Mindfulness of Death with Process of the Rescue and Public Relief Disaster” has three objectives 1) to study principle of mindfulness of death 2) to study process of the rescue and public relief disaster followed the faith in Buddhism and 3) to integrate mindfulness of death with process of the rescue and public relief disaster.  The field qualitative research was conducted by collecting the data from the Tipitaka, Vimuttimuk and Visuddhimuk included textbooks, academic articles, research articles, theses.  In addition, in-depth interview with structured interview was conducted in Prayao province.  The key informants were volunteer rescuers at 2 levels as head of resuscitation and first responder of emergency medical unit.  All of data were collected, analysis and synthesis to elaborate by descriptive technique.

The result showed that the mindfulness of death emphasized on the consciousness and recollection of death, cause of death and use own wit to consider death of oneself and others with precaution lead to aid rescue and disaster relief in all process including before, during confront and after facing with the emergency response situation under healthy body, disposable medical supplies and medical instruments.  The doctrine on mindfulness of death frequently help to release suffering, worry and fear from death fixed in mind impacted on daily life and maintain a peaceful mind.

The starting action as volunteer appeared in Dharma Tipitaka is generosity to help suffering people and charity.  The principle of Buddha Dharma in Theravada consists of Brahmavihara 4, Iddhipada 4, GharavasaDhamma 4, Sangahavatthu 4, Saraniyadhamma 6, and SappurisaDhamma 8 based on Sila, Smadhi, and Panna.  While the Mahayana faith in Bodhisattva lead the volunteer by qualification of Bodhisattva, Perfection 10, Ethic 10, and the great commitment.

The integration in the pragmatic works of mindfulness on death with process of the rescue and disaster relief as case study of volunteer rescuers in Prayao province as medical units of the initial resuscitation (Basic Life Support, BLS) appeared that all volunteer rescuers had mindfulness on death in their mind at good level adherence in practice.  All of the volunteers had mindfulness on death after facing emergency response situation more than before and during the facing.  The top 3 main thoughts of mindfulness on death integrated into the practical work of the volunteer rescuers were (1) fearless, not regret about the death and look at death as ordinarily of life (2) persistence to do good thing and (3) incubate loving-kindness and compassion.  While the least 3 were (1) reconsider about cause of death (2) utilize the recollection of death to consider one and others death and (3) cessation of defilement (greed, anger, delusion).  Although all volunteer rescuers specified that they neither recognized or familiar with mindfulness of death nor consider foundation of mindfulness. 

The motivation to become a volunteer rescuer has caused by oneself, families and communities such as the faith in deity, needs to relief illness of oneself and family, compensation for inappropriate behavior based on belief in the merits of kindness from deity.  The volunteer rescuers believed in good intentions and in matters of karma.  They have been expressed their respect for the faith by worship the spirits.
