Abstract

This dissertation has three main objectives: 1) to study the Buddhist communication guidelines for peace, 2) to study the communication problems in Thai society, and 3) to analyze the Buddhist communication guidelines in Thai society.

The research findings suggested that the Buddhist communication guidelines for peace are the way to communicate with the right speech, which is the middle path in the Noble Eightfold Path, i.e. fourfold good action in speech, namely (1) to abstain from the false speech, (2) to abstain from the malicious speech, (3) to abstain from the harsh speech, and (4) to abstain from the frivolous talk. Here are the principles of the well-spoken words: (1) to speak on a proper occasion, (2) to speak the truthful words, (3) to speak gentle words, (4) to speak the useful words, and (5) to speak with loving-kindness without prejudice. Meanwhile, the Buddha, as a communicator, is considered to be the ultimate genius, i.e. a person who knows the proper time and place, individuals, and the assembly. Moreover, he has the great loving-kindness for the public. It leads him to communicate with the public for their great benefit. As a result of this, those who listen to him with mindfulness and wisdom base on their faith have achieved their goal of peace and happiness in life.         The study of communication problems in Thai society suggested that communication consists of 4 characteristics: (1) communication with the false speech, (2) communication with the malicious speech, (3) communication with the harsh  speech, and (4) communication with the frivolous speech through  the online media leading to the origin of the word "Hate speech" nowadays. This kind of communication is called fourfold bad action in speech. It results in speaking and writing that cause the hatred to one another. Moreover, it becomes the source of war that destroys the social, political, and economic benefits; and aslo interrupts people in leading  their normal life in Thai society and the world society at present. The Buddhist communication guidelines for peace in Thai society according to Buddhism suggested that two  dhamma principles should be adopted together; the first one is  the fourfold good action in speech, namely (1) to avoid the false speech, (2) to avoid the malicious speech, (3) to avoid the harsh speech, and (4) to avoid the frivolous speech; the second one is    six states of conciliation, namely (1) to be amiable in deed, openly and in private, (2) to be amiable in word, openly and in private, (3) to be amiable in thought, openly and in private, (4) to share any lawful gains with virtuous fellows, (5) to keep without blemish the rules of conduct along with one’s fellows, openly and in private,  and (6) to be endowed with right views along with one’s fellows, openly and in private.    The profits of these six states of conciliation are to make others to keep one in mind, to be endearing, and to bring respect, conducing to sympathy and solidarity, non-quarrel, concord and harmony, and unity.
