Abstract

This dissertation entitled ‘Process of Changing Mindsets Based on Buddhist Principles’ has three objectives: 1) to study the contemplation based on Buddhist principles and mindset theory of Carol S. Dweck, 2) to develop the mindsets changing based on Buddhist principles for the kindergarten schools, and 3) to evaluate the mindsets changing based on Buddhist Principles of the kindergarten schools. This research was done by studying all the data from Tipiṭaka, Buddhist scriptures, academic papers, related research works and mindset theory.

In the research, the factors, internal and external, are highly emphasized by Buddhism; the internal factor basically means Yonisomanasikãra and the external factor refers to Paratoghosa, both are conducive to the right view at which Buddhism aimed as the goal of the development. In this work, it has studied process of development from mindset methods. It is effective to man’s success and what man wants to be. People’s personality and intelligence actually grow by mindset and can be developed as well. The mindsets changing based on Buddhist principles and mindset theory are similar in approach. The core competence of mindset theory is not for the extinction of suffering but its creativity of making only change people’s mindset. Mindsets changing can be made more alive and courageous in people's livelihood.

 

The quasi-experimental designed research was divided into 2 steps: first, the mindsets changing based on Buddhist principles were developed and validated by 10 experts’ opinions, second, the outcome was assessed by creating a training activity for sampling data of 27 nursery teachers from specific schools as one experimental group, and 35 teachers from other schools as another controlling group. The program was implemented from April – September of 2016 by using Mindset, Yonisomanasikãra, Mindfulness and Stress scale as tools. Evaluation was performed before and after starting the activities, in weeks 6 and 12. Then the method of repeated measures analysis of variance was used for analyzing the data. 

 

The mindsets changing comprise 8 activities of 60 minutes for each totalizing 8 hours. A 5-hour training was also added.  Sample data comprised of 58 females (93.5%) with an average age between 36 – 39 years. At the end of the experiment, the average score of fixed mindset tended to considerably decrease for both groups, but with no significant difference. The average score of Yonisomanasikãra as reflection rousing wholesome qualities was 21.2 (2.3), for mindfulness 37.3 (5.2), and stress 5.8 (2.8). However, both groups showed significant difference at the end of the sixth week. The follow-on period of all scores among groups showed no significant difference and the average scores of every category at 12-week period turned back to similar level as those before the activities.

 

It can be claimed that the proposed mindsets changing based on Buddhist Principles would be able to create the awareness and Yonisomanasikãra as reflection rousing wholesome qualities of nursery teachers, certainly with continuous practicing.
