Abstract

The thesis entitled “An Application of the Buddhadhamma to Promote the Project on Preserving Virginity of Students in Prang Ku School, Prang Ku District, Sisaket Province” consisted of three objectives: 1) to study the background of the project on preserving virginity of students in Prang Ku school, Prang Ku district, Sisaket province, 2) to study the Buddhadhamma in promoting the value of preserving virginity appearing in Theravada Buddhist scriptures, and 3) to propose ways of applying the Buddhadhamma on promoting the value of preserving virginity of students in Prang Ku school, Prang Ku district, Sisaket province. The thesis used the mixed methodology methods between qualitative and quantitative approaches through the in-depth interview with the sample of 18 persons.

The results of research were as follows:

             1) The background of the project on preserving virginity was begun from the project of youths doing good deeds to honor the late King Rama IX with an aim to reduce the risks of having sex in the school age of secondary school students in Prang Ku school and had been continued since year 2006 until nowadays, with the support of Prang Ku school.

             2) The Buddhist teachings that were applied on promoting the value of preserving virginity of students were Pañcasīla (the five precepts), Pañca-Dhamma (virtues enjoined by the five precepts), Paratoghosa (another’s utterance), Yonisomanasikāra (the systematic thinking), Hiri Otttappa (the moral shame and moral dread), Sati Sampajañña (awareness and mindfulness), Gharavasa-Dhamma (virtues for a good household life), Sappurisa-Dhamma (qualities of a good man), Indriya 5 (the five spiritual faculties) and, the Samatha Vipassana meditation.

             3) Ways of applying the Buddhadhamma on promoting the value of preserving virginity were through organizing activities such as an education on sex and sexually transmitted diseases, teenagers friend club, ordination meditation camp etc. Furthermore, the activities also included seminar, training, lecturing and preaching. All activities aimed to strengthen the immune system, life skills, mental and intellectual cultivation of students through applying the two basic buddhadhamma that covered both mental and external features, namely; 1) Yonisomanasikāra; the systematic thinking, and 2) Paratoghosa; to be in a good surrounding in the society in order to gain Sammaditthi (the right view) which considered as the root of goodness. Students should be encouraged to realize the value of preserving virginity in order to prevent any sexual relations in school age correctly and appropriately.
