Abstract

This thesis entitled “A Study of Buddhadhama Principles in Lanna Scriptures for Auspicious Ceremony”. The objectives are as follows: 1) to study the history of content structure in Lanna scriptures, 2) to study the principles of Buddhamma in Lanna scriptures, and 3) to study the influence of Lanna scriptures towards Lanna society.

The study found that Lanna scripture is an ancient document that Lanna ancestors brought to note various stories, most of contents are to teach the Dhamma in Buddhism. Lanna scriptures are wisdom and knowledge caused by Buddhist monks and who had been ordained and inscribed or written. In the Lanna society, it was found that the use of Lanna Dhamma alphabets were primarily written notes, to use the alphabets in writing can be divided into 2 periods as follows 1) Lanna before receiving the influence from Siam, Lanna had their own language and letters called Lann Dhamma alphabets or “Tua Mueng”, 2) Lanna after receiving the influence from Siam, the Siamese government had the role of educational change in Lanna by requiring the teaching of central Thai language, reducing the significant of Lanna language that Lanna people are more interested in learning central Thai language in order to the post  progress of working in the government and good living that causes Lanna Dhamma language to be reduced in Lanna society.

So as to this research has brought the contents of 5 Lanna scriptures, namely Sãrãkrivijãsutta, Lokãvuthi, Atthiuņahassa, Buddhasanggahaloka to compare with Tipitak scriptures found that the contents of the Lanna scriptures have quite similar to the contents of Tipitaka scriptures abovementioned content. That still remains Lanna scriptures in Jayasanggaha did not find the content there was similar to the content in Tipitaka. However, Lanna scriptures used in 5 auspicious ceremonies these have interfered with the principle of threefold training and appearing the principles for living as such 5 precepts, 3 marvels  and make merits.

The influence of Lanna scripture towards beliefs, traditions, rituals in Lanna society, Lanna people are a group that respects to the Triple Gem. Whoever believes and respects to the Triple Gem that will be born at happy states (Sugati), do not go to the four states of misery (Apãyabhūmi), having Nivana as the ultimate goal. That can be seen from the scriptures of palm leaves as appeared in every temple because of the beliefs caused by deep-rooted Buddhist beliefs. Therefore, making ancient philosophers to compose scriptures that are consistent with Buddhist principles inserted into the content in order to use those Lanna scriptures as a medium to persuade that people are afraid of all sins and then turn to do good deeds, follow the morality and Buddhist practices that Buddha determined for being auspiciousness in life and to be a way of freeing suffering in transmigration (samsara) according to Buddhist beliefs.
