The Development of Citizen according to the Buddhist Integration in Baan Sam Kha Village, Mae Tha District, Lampang Province

Abstract

The thesis entitled “The development of citizen according to the Buddhist Integration in Baan Sam Kha village, Mae Tha district, Lampang province” consisted of three objectives. The study aimed: 1) to study the concepts and theories on the development of citizen according to the norms of Thai society and ways for the development of citizen in Baan Sam Kha Village,Mae Tha District, Lampang Province, 2) to study the Buddhadhamma supporting the development of citizen, and 3) to synthesis ways for the development of citizen according to the Buddhist integration of Baan Sam Kha village, Mae Tha district, Lampang province. This is a qualitative research by using the methods of document and field research that was created through the descriptive analysis and synthesis of documents, related researches and the in-depth interview with the sample of 12 persons.

The results of research were as follows: 1. From the study of the concepts and theories on the development of citizen according to the norm of Thai society, it was found that the development of quality of life in a person was an important mechanism for cultivating a good citizen to comply with the social norms, to acquire positive attitudes and values towards the society, to lead a happy life in living with others in the society, and to acquire enough intelligence and potential to develop the society and country. Being a good citizen was a reflection of the important fundamental qualification in a person as everyone was the citizen under democracy. The qualifications of being a good citizen that would be suitable for the 21st century society consisted of 12 attributes which were 1) respecting differences, 2) political participation according to the democratic form of government with the King as Head of State with the love of nation, religion and king, 3) solving problems in a peaceful way, 4) cultivating creative thinking, 5) respecting the law, 6) cultivating justice, 7) acquiring responsibility, 8) cultivating public mind, 9) cultivating honesty, 10) cultivating an ability to communicate and receive information, 11) cultivating an ability to conserve the environment, and 12) cultivating the consciousness of being Thai. All these 12 attributes were the characteristics of active citizens who had both physical and psychological integrity. Ways for the development of citizen in Baan Sam Kha village, Mae Tha district, Lampang province emphasized the importance of mutual rights in politics, economics, society and community resources. Freedom of expression in Baan Sam Kha village was carried out horizontally with every member in the village having equal rights, listening to each other’s opinion under the clear and comprehensive village rules, recognizing the values of everyone equally and participating in solving community problems creatively. 2. From the study of the Buddhadhamma that supported the development of citizen, it was found that the Five strengths or power (pañcabalāni) was the basic Dhamma that was important for the development of a person and supported the practice of other Dhamma principles. While, the Mangala Sutta or highest blessings was for the development of citizen, namely 1) Attasamma panidhi; setting oneself in the right course through living life on the basis of sufficiency in order to be self-reliant and not subject to obsession with defilements, 2) highly trained discipline; respecting in the rules of social norms, 3) Anākulakammanta; a livelihood which is free from complications by realizing one’s responsibility on the role and duty of citizen, 4) blameless actions; unexceptionable or beneficial activities that would not cause harm to oneself and others for a peaceful coexistence of the society as a whole, and 5) Nātaksangaha; rendering aid to relations with a volunteer spirit to contribute to the society. 3. From the study on ways for the development of citizen according to the Buddhist integration of Baan Sam Kha village, Mae Tha district, Lampang province, it was found that the characteristic of development of citizen in the village was according to Communitarianism with everyone in the village having the equal rights, listening to each other’s opinions, being able to rely on oneself, living with nature commensally, having clear and comprehensive village rules in order to maintain the benefits for everyone so that everyone in the village could live together peacefully. All these characteristics covered various areas in the village in both environment and public utility in order for everyone in the village to make the most out of the resources in their village.
