An Analytical Study of Anupubbikathã in the Tipitaka

Abstract

This thesis entitled “An Analytical Study of Anupubbikathã in the Tipitaka”. The objectives of this research as follows: 1) to study the basic knowledge about teaching of Anupubbikathã, 2) to study the teachings of Anupubbikathã in the Tipitaka, and 3) to analyze the teachings application of Anupubbikathã in today’s society.

               The study found that Anupubbikathã is Buddhist sermon shown respectively for purifying and refining the hospitality of listeners to be clean, pure and neat deeply into layers from easy to difficult until the mind of listeners are ready to listen to Four Noble Truths and understanding in Dhamma of Ultimate Truth which consists of 5 principles: 1) Dãnakathã is to show the giving and the benefit of giving, 2) Sîlakathã is to show the maintaining the precepts and the benefit of precepts, 3) Saggakathã is the show the heaven as a result of good deeds that is to give and maintain the precepts, 4) Kãmãdînavakathã is to show the demerit of sexual attachment that is worldly pleasure (Lōkīya), and 5) Nekkhammãnisamsakathã is to show the merit result of leaving sex that is supermandane or Dhamma happiness(Lōkuttara) and true and good thing.

               In this show of Anupubbikathã, most of Buddha will show to the householders or laypeople. The showing of Anupubbikathã will focus on the teaching to the householders more than who will be Buddhist monks because Anupubbikathã has the content of giving, maintaining the precepts, the heaven, the punishment of eroticism and renunciation (Nekkhamma). That most of laymen will have the opportunity to experience more than the Buddhist monks.

           And this research analyzed the application for teaching guideline of Anupubbikathã as well as suggestion for teaching methods about Dãnakathã, Sîlakathã, Saggakathã, Kãmãdînavakathã and Nekkhammãnisamsakathã in today’s society.
