This thesis entitled “Āhãrepatikūlasaññã kammatthãna: Buddhis Dietary Principles”. This study is documentary research and the objectives of this study as follows: 1) to study the concept of food consumption in Buddhism, 2) to study the way of food consumption according to Āhãrepatikūlasaññã kammatthãna, and 3) to analyze the way of food consumption according to Āhãrepatikūlasaññãkammatthãna in daily life.
It was found that food refers to the conditions that bring power, life support things that nourish the body and mind and the cause of power and growth there are 4 types, namely 1. Kavaļińkãrãhãra means physical nutriment, 2. Phassãhãra means contact, 3. Manosañcetanãhãra means intention, and 4. Viññãņãhãra means the spirit that is the factor of causing abstraction. That food is important to all creatures, especially, Kavaļińkãrãhãra if there is no food, it cannot live. Buddhist food consumption can be studied from the practice of the Buddha. Which normally consume some food without sticking in taste, did not sonsume too much or too little, consumed only one meal a day to create a fit for the body. For the discipline, there is a provision on food consumption in Sekhiyavattara category called Bhojanãpatisamyuta.
Āhãrepatikūlasaññã is one of concentrating meditation (Samãdha Meditation) which is a trick how to calm the mind until the mind firmly in one mood called Ekaggatã. Āhãrepatikūlasaññã means the determination of sewage in food by determining 10 behaviors, namely going, seeking, consumption, addressing, piling up, not digesting, digesting, resulting, flowing out and staining. In addition, it still considers the ugliness of food that has been eaten in many ways. That repeatedly said “Patikūlam” When did this, Saññã means the determination of ugliness about food, including physical nutriment will be more evident in the mood of meditation.
The virtue of determination of Āhãrepatikūlasaññãkammatthãna, initially, it will caused the well – being of the body, no disease caused by eating food at the higher level and causing enlightenment in Rūpkhan (Corporeality). That can cut the lust in taste, don’t have delight in food, no desire for a satisfying taste, calm the mind, suspension of non-anxiety, the mind is happy and developing the mind to reach Nirvana.
The application of the principle of Āhãrepatikūlasaññã–kammatthãna in daily life for smart food consumption into 3 principles, namely 1. The limited nutrition is the applied principle from the teaching of Bhojanamattaññutã and the principle of Āhãrepatikūlasaññã there are guidelines for considering before consuming, stopping eating habits during the day, not eating food with obsession in taste, not eating food with hoping that it is a decoration, not eating food for hoping to decorate the body, but eating to get rid of encroachment and in order to promote own health to have strength in various works. 2. The nutrition practice applies from the teaching of Buddhist ways in consumption and a part of Bhojanapatisamyuta there are guidelines, including eating rice moderately, chewing rice thoroughly before swallowing, don’t eat rice gluttonously or hurry to eat, determining the taste of food perfectly, don’t eat at night, having manner for eating means paying respect to food, rice, cooker etc. 3. The nutraceutical applies from eating principle consciously and eating for healthy there are guidelines, including the understanding: food characteristics and how to eat, as well as the understanding of the true value, the artificial value of food and choose to consume correctly. The accession: clean and hygienic food. And the development: self-mental quality to complete all the time by Vipassanã-kammatthãna and mental training according to Āhãrepatikūlasaññã will cause understanding of eating truly.
