Abstract

The thesis entitled “Community and its Participation in Promoting Buddhist Health for Baan Long Elder,  Moo 2, Nong Lom Sub-District, Hang Chat District, Lampang Province” consisted of three objectives. The study aimed: 1) to study concepts on the participation in promoting the health of elder, 2) to study practices on promoting elder according to the Buddhist ways, and 3) to seek for theories on the participation in promoting Buddhist health for Baan Long elder, Moo 2, Nong Lom sub-district, Hang Chat district, Lampang province. The thesis used the mixed methodology methods between quantitative and documentary approaches.

From the study of the concepts on the participation in promoting health of elder, it was found that participation referred to an involvement of family, community and society to carry out activities that should be done together voluntarily and to be an important force in organizing public activities, namely activities on the principles of relationship making, on creating community power and on working in collaboration with each other in order to maintain and protect the common interests.

From the study on the practices on promoting elder according the Buddhist ways, it was found that in terms of giving (dāna): the majority of the research sample usually reminded their elder to keep calm and peaceful, in terms of the moral conduct (sīla): the majority of the research sample gave importance to their elder by talking to them with compassion, loving-kindness and sincerity, in terms of mental development (bhāvanā); the majority of the research sample usually reminded their elder to be careful with the food and medicines they ate by having to check clearly that they would not be harmful.

From the study on the promotion of the health of elder according to the Buddhist ways, it was found that in terms of giving (dāna): the relationship making principles should be applied by taking care of the elder closely and the community could contribute by giving encouragement to the elder, in terms of the moral conduct (sīla): the elder would feel proud if the community realized the importance of being an elderly person who was also valuable in the community and society, in terms of  mental development (bhāvanā): the principle on working in collaboration with each other in order to maintain and protect the common interests should be applied in order to make the elder feel valuable.
