This research of three objectives, namely:- (1) to study Bāhusacca in Theravāda Buddhism, (2) to study the Dhamma principles relating to Bāhusacca, and (3) to study an application of Bāhusacca for living in contemporary society.This research is a documentary research, all information gathering form Tipitaka, secondary source form sub-commentaries, and another references.
The findings show that is qualities of learned person, widely knowledgeable pay attention to listen which well learnedhood, consisting of five elements that are (1) Bahussutā: having heard or learned many ideas, (2) Dhatā : having retained or remember them, (3) Vacasā paricitā : having frequently practiced them verbally, having consolidated them by verse, (4) Manasānupekkhitā : having looked over them with the mind, (5) Diṭṭhiyā supaṭividdhā : having thoroughly penetrated them by view.
Being Bāhusacca gets Dhamma principle inside and outside. In inside are (Yonisomanasikāra) proper attention, (Sadhā) a gift offered through faith, (Pannā) wisdom, (Sila) Morality and (Pativedha) penetration. At outside is (Paratoghosa) listening to other, hearing, listening to the suggestions. These are important things to be Bahussutā and Bāhusacca. Many virtues of the monks’ Bāhusacca are happened to good gain, can abandon bad action, attain the fruit of kusala Dhamma, attain the path and fruit of Nibbāna easily. And for the virtues of lay peoples’ Bāhusacca are to get praised by scholars and get benefit in present world, next world and attain to the Nibbāna as well.
In the application of Bāhusacca for living in contemporary society, the researcher used the Four Noble Truths for analysis. First ‘dukkha’ the truth suffering meaning is problem crisis have an effect on quality of life of humanity. Then search ‘dukkha sumudaya’ the cause of suffering that happen in order for getting ‘dukkha nirodha’ the key to ending suffering is to remove all desires, using ‘Bāhusacca’ as a path. Bāhusacca, this Dhamma principle is an important thing for sorting out the problems of human quality of life in contemporary society. The main problems are from uneducated knowledge and lack of critical thinking. Therefore, an application property of five elements of Bāhusacca for seeing through the solution with changing society are both in the worldly level and the religious level.
