This thesis entitled ‘A Study of Personality according to Six Intrinsic Natures of a Person of the Buddhist Faculty’s Students of Mahachulalongkorn- rajavidyalaya University: A Classroom of Watchaichumpolchanasongkram Kanchanaburi Province” has three objectives: 1) to study the theory of personality and six intrinsic natures of a person in Theravada Buddhism, and 2) to study personality according to the six intrinsic natures of a person of the Buddhist Faculty’s Students of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University: A Classroom of Watchaichumpol- chanasongkram Kanchanaburi Province. This is a qualitative research done by interview of seven expertises including those who involved with the required population.
In the research, it was found that according to the theory of personality it basically means the specific characteristic of a person such as body, face, behaviour, etiquette, dressing, action, speaking, thinking, thought, attitude and emotion; one always expresses those mentioned things through his/her behaviours. As regards the six temperaments in Theravada Buddhism, it can be summarized as that such six intrinsic natures of a person by nature means one’s behaviours which are bodily, verbally and mentally expressed in certain manners giving rise to the different characteristic. In this research, they are concluded as follows: 1) Lustful Temperament; one is prone to behave in a lustful manner, 2) Hateful Temperament; one is prone to behave in an angrily manner, 3) Ignorant Temperament; one is prone to behave in an insensitively manner, 4) Faithful Temperament; one is inclined to behave in a faithful manner, 5) Intelligent Temperament; one is inclined to behave in an intelligent manner, 6) Speculative Temperament; one is inclined to behave in a speculative manner. It is said that by virtue of those inclinations one may possess only some temperament or mixed ones depending upon environment; one who loves lovely thing may be sensitive to what he/she just hears resulting in believing what was told; this clearly shows that a lustful temperament is somehow mixed with delusion temperament. It can be said that in each inclination both strong and weak aspects can be influenced upon one’s behaviours depending upon surrounding factors; in some way the good temperament is taking its course such as intelligent temperament. However, the bad side of such temperament is also caused; one is taking too much time to think about things whereby one is not prepared to make a certain decision at once.
When taking interviewing of seven expertise’s s standpoints into account, it showed that the faculty of Buddhism’s students in Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, a classroom of Watchaichumpolchanasongkram Kanchanaburi Province answered questionnaires that the mentioned six intrinsic natures of a person are obviously mixed together; most of them is of hateful temperament because by and large those students are in the ages of youth. The rest inclinations are sometime expressed depending upon some situations and thereby varying behaviours due to their status, sex, age including environment. It can be pointed out that in morally adjusting one’s behaviours the application of Buddhist virtues should be made so that one’s personality can be improved because the six intrinsic natures of a person play a fundamental role in the successfulness of human being’s life.
