Public Participation in Community Waste Management of Tunglooknok Sub–District, Kampaengsaen District, Nakhonpathom Province

Abstract

The main objectives of this study are: i) to study the waste management of Tunglooknok Sub-district, Kampaengsaen District, Nakhonpathom Province; ii) to study people's participation in the waste management of Tunglooknok Sub-district, Kampaengsaen District, Nakhonpathom Province; and iii) to present the participatory waste management model of Tunglooknok Sub-district, Kampaengsaen District, Nakhonpathom Province. It was employed by the Mixed Methods: quantitative research, a survey research in which data are collected by using questionnaires and the size of the sample group was 400 out of 13,136 people determined by using Taro Yamane's table, and the collected data were analyzed by the statistical analysis program in social science to find various statistics; and qualitative research in which data were collected using in-depth interview with 12 key-informants, including abbot of the monastery, Permanent Secretary of Sub-district Administrative Office, Sub-district Administrative Organization's members, Sub-district headman, village headman, School director, people and involved ones in solid waste management of the community, and the collected data including the open-ended questionnaire were grouping according to the objectives.

The findings of the study revealed that:

The public participation in waste management of the community of Tunglooknok Sub-district, Kampaengsaen District, Nakhonpathom Province has been found that people in the Tunglooknok Sub-district community participate in community development and waste management by overview in various aspects very well starting from joining the search for problems, analyze the causes of problems, and various guidelines that may be used to solve the problem getting involved in waste management, of which activities caused by the integration of needs based on people in the community with exchanging knowledge, realizing useful information and regular meetings at the village level. It is because of various information received from the public will be able to see the needs and allow people in the community to participate in activities that happened from the beginning, that results benefits from various activities happening in the community to people. When activities arise from the needs of people's participation in the community, therefore, the response of participation in the disposal of waste caused efficiency and effectiveness.

Therefore, having considered the research results, it has been found that people in the community took part in  activities organized by the organization and community leaders or people in the community whether villagers each participant pay attention in people's participation in every aspect of the community, starting from allowing people in the community to play a part in providing information, analyze problems, propose problems, requirements and select appropriate solutions with the role of a community agency or leader promoting, supporting activities for good results or to be as learning center on garbage disposal within the community and general public who are interested to gain knowledge back to apply in their own area. And to be a model for starting to develop community using management system of 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, can respond to waste management because it can reduce amount and still generate income, create benefits and be endless development.
