Abstract

This thesis has three objectives, 1) to study of the structure and contents of the Khandhavibhaṅga, 2) to study of the structure and contents of the Khandhavāravagga, and 3) to analytical study of the doctrine of the Five Aggregates (Khandas) in the Khandhavibhaṅga and the Khandhavāravagga. From the study found that :-

The Khandhavibhaṅga in Abhidhamma-piṭaka has mentioned the Lord Buddha had preached in the Tāvatiṁsa heaven in the first time, and then Khandhavāravagga was in the Suttanta-piṭaka. The similarity of these scriptures is the collection of the important teachings which are the traditional doctrines on the Five Aggregates; Corporeality, Feeling, Perception, Mental Formations, and Consciousness that it reflects to the life factors which is the ultimate reality, it is existence in our life, it is around us, and it is the motivation for searching and consider by the mental objects.

The structure was described the Five Aggregates and the related categories, it was brief in the Threefold Training (Ti-sikkhā): Morality, Concentration, and Wisdom, which has the difference of explanation the ultimate reality in the Khandhavibhaṅga by deny the person who related, it is opposite of explanation in the Khandhasaṁyutta that the Lord Buddha and the Noble One had preached following the individual characteristics to understand and relieving of suspicion, and leading to practice for ending of the cycle of life.

The meaning of both scriptures is the same, but it just is different classification of dhamma which is the state of mind-objects, kinds, and cause and effect. The characteristics of relationship also is the same, because the explanation of the Five Aggregates is related to the Paṭiccasamuppāda which is an explanation of the cause and effect of all livings that depend on each other, promote the mind and matter to occur in nature of all living beings. That is the consideration of the cycle of rising and falling; the rising is to show that the rise of the Five Aggregates causing of contact (Phassa) which is dressed up, it has appeared ignorance, mental formations, etc., it has depended on the eleven characteristics such the past, the future, the present, etc. Then, an extinguishing or falling is from the consideration the reality clearly, therefore, it can abandon from the attachment, pleasure, satisfaction, and leaved of the Five Aggregates. It is to make the right understanding on the reality that is the Three Characteristics (Ti-Lakkhaṇa)
