Abstract

This dissertation entitled ‘The Competency Development of The Royal Thai Army’s Chaplains Based on Buddhist Integration’ has three objectives: 1)  to study the ideas and theories on the development of competencies according to modern sciences and Buddhist teachings being assigned to develop Royal Thai Army’s chaplains’ competencies, 2) to study the roles, duties, states of problem and desirable Royal Thai Army’s chaplains’ competencies, and 3) to propose the Buddhist integrated guidelines to develop the Royal Thai Army’s chaplains’ competencies. This is a qualitative research done by studying documentaries, in-depth interview and focus group discussion.

In the research, it was clearly found that the theories concerning with the competencies refer to the theories of human resource development, theory of competency, and theory of PDCA wherein the desirable competencies are primarily of three aspects: physical, mental and intellectual competency; each theory is purposely assigned to utilize the developed competency to effectively drive the Royal Thai Army’s chaplains’ roles and duty into the following four categories: 1) teaching and training of morality, 2) practicing Dhamma, 3) performing religious rites, and 4) attending of sick person. In these matters, the Buddhist integrated development of competencies are actualized through: 1) four paths of accomplishment, 2) four sublime states of mind, 3) four kinds of development, 4) seven qualities of a good friend, 5) five qualities of a preacher, 6) four Buddhist styles of teaching, and 7) marvel on teaching. In the application of the integrated Buddhist teachings into ways of life, it showed that the guidelines to develop the Royal Thai Army’s chaplains’ competencies are called PACKED MODEL comprising of P meaning Planning to perform, A meaning Army’s Goal referring to the Royal Thai Army’ s goal or expected result, C meaning Cooperation where physical, mental and intellectual cooperation are closely given, K meaning Kicking-off referring to making an effort in doing what is assigned, E meaning Elation whereby all chaplains are proud of their roles an duty, D meaning Dhamma by which all chaplains put the Buddhist teachings into their practice in order to get the physical, mental and intellectual competencies respectively.
