This research is of three objectives: 1) to study the tradition of Phee Dong ritual tradition, 2) to study the beliefs in the tradition of Phee Dong ritual, 3) to analyze the philosophical beliefs in the tradition of Phee Dong ritual which has been effected to Chiang Mai people. It is the documentary research. The results were found that :
1) The tradition of Phee Dong ritual of Chiang Mai people has appeared in both ancient manuscripts and the oral folk stories of villagers. “Phee Dong” or the Guardian Spirit is a devil demon who likes to eat human. One day, the Lord Buddha came with his disciples. The devil demon will eat the Buddha, but the Buddha shows the miracle power to tame him with his compassion. That causes the fear of the demon bringing him to observe the five precepts. But with demon’s habit, then, the demon would like to eat only a buffalo a year instead of human eating. This is the origin of the Phee Dong ritual tradition. 2) On the beliefs in the tradition of Phee Dong ritual ceremony, the demon ritual ceremony is the moral support to the villagers in this area to feel happy. This ceremony of Demon sacrifice is together with the belief that two demons will protect the people from danger in the forest. They will offer the wettest in the rainy season. If people do not annually perform the Phee Dong ritual ceremony, they will cause many disasters such as plague and various disasters suffering. Therefore, the Phee Dong ritual ceremony should be every year performed. 3) On the analysis on the philosophical beliefs in the tradition of Phee Dong ritual that effected to Chiang Mai people, it was found that; this is relecting the cultural coordination between traditional beliefs and Buddhism and between the native groups and the newcomer group. The mentioned cultural coordination is becoming a tradition of Chiang Mai people since ancient times. Until now, the native villagers have to perform this ritual in every year.
