A Study of the Buddhist Way to EliminateMãna in Theravada Buddhism

Abstract

 This is the qualitative research using the method of documentary research. It aims to study of the way of practice to eliminate Mãna in Theravada Buddhism following the three objectives as, 1) to study of Mãna (conceit) in Theravada Buddhist scriptures, 2) to study of the Buddhist way to eliminate Mãna (conceit) in Theravada Buddhist scriptures, and 3) to analytically study of the way of elimination of Mãna in the daily life. It had studied from the data of Buddhist texts such Tipitaka, sub-commenteries, and other texts with the thesises, thePakaranavisesa text, the academic works, and other related books.

             The resulf of research found that the term Mãna in Buddhism means a self-arrogant, conceitedly, it is the defilement by the dharmic factor, e.g., conceit mental factor which consists of the consciousness rooted in greed. Mana in this is a self-arrogant, conceitedly compared to others to be better than them, equal to them, lower than them. It is deponed on the five aggregrates, form, feeling, preception, mental formation, and consciousness. It is depened on the objects to contact with the internal and external sense-fields that is eye-contact, ear-contact, nose-contact, tounge-contact, body-contact, and mind-contact. It is the matterand no matter happened. When having happened, it will show aspects of many different causes until becoming many aspects of conceits. The disadvantage of Mãna is self-inflicted, it is lack of opportunity to gain knowlage from the wise men. It has been in the suffering and cycle of life. Then, penalty to society is,the conceitedperson is difficult to  associate with others and other person also associate with him. Because he isa self-arrogant until beome a small mind in the society and wasting destruction of human relations, no oneassociated him as a friend. People are disgusted to him for causing of conceit. The conceited person is diffecult to considerate such as the difference of the four clastes.

             Buddhism taught us to be mindful and awareness, to have the precepts, to be concentrated and wisdom. It taught us to be patient, respected one, easy to support, to eliminate self and to decrease their thought and conceit, and to practice for living together in the society peacefully.

             The regularly activities in daily life, the important thing is to be mindfulness which knowing by the thought in the present period. It is always to be mindfulness control the thought, including to notice the mind with in greed, anger, delusion, craving, conceit view to change the mind in every moments. To use mindfulness recognizes all time and know those ideas with the thought that this is not concerned with me, no have any idea, to observe the feeling of body and mind arisen and fallen in quickly thought-moment until arisen of the purification of morality, concentration, and wisdom (purity) to be insight knowledge, the knowledge observed the defilements which is called Pariññã: comprehension causing the cultivation of the foundation of mindfulness, the Egihtfold Noble Paths, the qualities contributing of enlightenment to see the defilement that is conceit which arisen, existed, and fallen. According to the law of the Three Characteristics is followed the Dependent Origination has eabandoned the defilements that is conceit by Arahatta-magga and Arahatta-phala until the end of holy life, the end of birth, and the end of becoming. The duty what had done, other duty is nothing, to live in the goal happiness forever.
