Abstract

This is the qualitative research. It contains three objectives; 1) to study the Enlightenment in Theravada Buddhist scripture, 2) to study the accumulation of the perfection for enlightenment in Theravada Buddhist scripture and 3) to study of the cultivation and perfection in enlightenment of Venerable Mahākaccāyanathera.

The results found that the enlightenment referred to the one who has attained one noble path and fruits among the four noble stages: the Streamenterer (Sotāpanna), Once-returner (Sakadāgāmī), Non-returner (Anāgāmi) and Arahant. The complete attainment of Arahant is considered as the ultimate stage of the enlightenment in Theravada Buddhism.

The accumulation of full perfection for Enlightenment in the Theravada Buddhist scripture referred to merit in various lives until their 10 perfections became full or complete, they are; giving perfection, morality, renunciation, wisdom, effort, patient, truthfulness, inspiration, compassion and neutrality perfection which are the highest qualification of Bodhisatta who will certainly be the next Buddha. However, some noble disciples have ever cultivated these perfections and attained enlightenment with different qualification such as Sariputta Thera, Mahamoggallana Thera and Mahākaccāyana Thera and so on.

Mahākaccāyana Thera had performed his perfections from time to time until attaining the highest stage or Arhantaship with the four paṭisambhidās or discriminations, the eight Vimokkhas or liberations and the sixth Abiññās or super-knowledges by following the content of the Buddha’s teaching. He also was granted   as an Excellent noble disciple who explains  the brief teaching of the Buddha in clear comprehension in Theravada Buddhism.
