This research has two objectives: 1) To study the consonant phonemes, vowel phonemes, and tonemes. 2) To study the syllabic structure of Tai Yai dialect spoken at Piang Luang village, Wiang Haeng district, Chiang Mai Province. The data was taken from 10 informants of native speakers. The study was conducted according to the Structural linguistics.
The results of the study found that there are 17 consonant phonemes. They are as follows: / p /. / t /. / k /. / ɂ /. / ph /. / th /. / kh /. / m /. / n /. / ɲ /. / ŋ /. / s /. / c /. / h /. / l /. / w /. / y / and three consonant clusters: / kw /. / khw /. / sw /
There are 18 single vowel phonemes: / i /. / i: /. / ɯ /. / ɯ: /. / u /. / u: /. / e /. / e: /. / ǝ /. / ǝ: /. / o /. / o: /. / ɛ /. / ɛ: /. / a /. / a: /. / ɔ /. / ɔ: / and one diphthong phoneme: / aա /.
There are five tonal phonemes. They are as follows: one mid tone, one Low tone, one Falling tone, one High tone and one Rising tone. As for the syllabic structure, there are three main types: monosyllabic C(:)V(:)(S/N)T, disyllabic C(:)V(:) (S/N)T+C(:)V(:)(N)(S)T, and polysyllabic C(:)V(:)(S/N)T+C(:)V(:)(S/N)T+C(:)V(:)(S/N)T. Structures have the smooth syllable ending with long vowel or continuant / m . / n / . / ŋ /. / w /. / y /, where as the checked syllables end with / p . t . k /. ɂ /.
