This dissertation entitled ‘A Study of the Worthy Dhutanga Vatta in Thai Society’ has three objectives: 1) to study the principles and practices of Dhutaṅgavatta in Theravada Buddhism, 2) to study Thai Sangha’s Dhutaṅgavatta in Thai society, and 3) to propose the desirable practical way of Dhutaṅgavatta in the present Thai society. This is a qualitative research done by documentary study, field research and in-depth interview.
In the research, it was found that there are different benefits, both good and bad in the observation of Dhutaṅgavatta. However, when they are approximately taken into account, they give rise to austerity in the utilization of four requisites; one who properly observes Dhutaṅgavatta will not be attached to the clothes, shelter, food and medicine in luxurious manners, one will be easily fed, being mindful and constrained in the Dhutaṅgavatta one decided to follow. In interviewing 11 monks who observe Dhutaṅgavatta in the northern and northeastern regions, it showed that the Buddhist monks’ observation of Dhutaṅgavatta has been giving rise to the religious followers leading to training in patient and mindfulness.
