Abstract
This thesis has three objectives: 1) to study contents, doctrines as appeared in Kanḍhakumāra chapter of Vessantarajātaka, 2) to study the Buddhist scholars’ opinions towards the contents and doctrines as appeared in Kanḍhakumāra chapter of Vessantarajātaka, 3) to propose the ways to apply the contents and doctrines as appeared in Kanḍhakumāra chapter of Vessantarajātaka in daily life in the present society. This is a qualitative research.
In the research, it was found that in the great birth story (Vessantarajātaka) the Kumāra chapter is chiefly focused on the donation of both boy and girl named Jālī and Kaṇhā done by Vessantara. In this chapter, 101 verses, 22 sermons and 10 doctrines were found: a friendly welcome, faith and wisdom for instance. The Buddhist scholars’ opinions towards the contents and doctrines as appeared in Kanḍhakumāra chapter of Vessantarajātaka show two aspects: 1) Lokiya purpose,
2) Lokuttara purpose. In these respects, three kinds of value were found: 1) social value; 2) virtuous value, 2) cultural value. Based on these guidelines, we should find the ways to cultivate morality to children, youths, and general people wherein the application of those Dhamma in daily life can be made properly and rightly.
