ABSTRACT
The purposes of this thesis were to study 1) Buddhist tradition of Cambodian,2) Traditions of "Boon PhaJoomBin" in Cambodia, and 3) to study the influence of "Boon phaJoom Bin" tradition to Cambodian Buddhists.
The result was found that. Buddhist teachings about dedicated to the merit is considered an important activity that all Buddhists should do which response to mother, father, or relatives who passed away, they were born in a better world. Making Thaksina actions to dedicate merit is to promote gratitude to the children and is considered to help protect the soul of the ancestors as well. Khmer tradition "Boon PhaJoom Bin" is a combination of faith in the religion of Brahman, Buddhist and ancestral spirits (Nieata). The present day festival is a total of 15 days, starting from the first day of the month to the fifteenth of the 10th month or “Patarabot”of the year, according to the lunar calendar in order to take care the monks during the rainy season, collecting and sharing the merit to the deceased. It promotes gratitudeand makes a harmony in community. In Khmer festival “Boon PhaJoom Bin” traditionis based on a combination of beliefs about the worship of ancestral spirits and Indian culture. Both of these cultures value the ancestral spirit. The deceased are rewarded by the similar sacrifice. Khmer people have accepted these similar cultures but the worship of the ancestors is just a ritual done to plead for happiness only. There are four main principles which they are as follow 1) to teach the karma and the effect of karma, 2) to teach gratitude, 3) to teach about the sharing, donation, radiation of loving kindness to human beings and animals, and 4) to achieve harmonious.
