Abstract
This research paper aims at 2 purposes; 1) to study the story of perfection accumulating of the Subhūtithera in Theravāda Buddhist scripture and 2) to study the Enlightenment of Subhūti in Theravāda Buddhist Scripture by collecting data from the Tipitaka, its commentaries, sub-commentaries and other texts concerned such as Visuddhimagga, then compiled in description and verified by experts. The findings revealed that;
Subhūtithera was one among 80 great disciples of The Buddha. In previous lives, he had performed virtues by making the seat which decorated by beautiful flowers offering to Padumuttarabuddha for 7 days and nights and made wish for being excellent disciple in Araṇavihārī living without enemy and Dakkhineya or one worthy of donation. With such results of offering, in last life he was born in rich family with delight and pleasurable complexion which later bring the faithful appearance to public. By such his outlook, he later was called as Subhūti which means ‘well-born one’.
For the enlightenment of Subhūtithera, it found that in the last life, he was born as grandson of Anathapindika. Whenever his grandfather went to listen the teaching of the Buddha, Subhūti always followed him. After grew up, he had strong faith and desired to renunciation then asked for permission for ordination in front of the Buddha. After became Bhikkhu, he learned meditation and practice in forest by cultivating loving-kindness as a base then starting insight later. No longer, he attained enlightenment with 6 super-knowledge in the same day of Jetavanavihara celebration. Subhutithera was granted him an excellent disciple in 2 positions; excellence in Araṇavihārī or one who lives without enemy, that is living without taints and excellence in Dakkhineya or one worthy of donation because his manners bring the faith to public.
