Abstract
This research paper had 2 purposes; 1) to study principle of Suññata or emptiness in Cuḷa-suññata Sutta, 2) to study the insight meditation practice with emptiness in Cuḷa-suññata Sutta by taking research data from Theravada Buddhist scriptures, including Tipitaka, Its commentaries and Visesapakarana texts, as well as relevant academic papers, then compiled and composed in descriptive style and finally reviewed by experts. The findings were that;
Cuḷa-suññata Sutta is the discourse concerning with the teaching of emptiness and presented the practical way. Its explained the meaning of emptiness in 4 aspects;
1) empty state of beings, person, self, I and others or true nature of 5 aggregates as non-self, 2) empty state from lust, aggression and delusion etc. orthe emptiness of thoughts indicating that the emptiness is Nibbana, 3) the path of transcendence with 3 reasons, i.e. because of being empty from holding 5 aggregates as self, being empty from defilements and being empty due to holding Nibbana as its objects, 4) emptiness as the meaning of significance or contemplating on one object until it becomes empty from others.
The practice of insight meditation with emptiness found in Cuḷa-suññata Sutta revealed that there was the insight meditation practice by cultivating tranquility before then insight and practical way based on Mahasatipatthana reguarding to 5 aggregates and sense spheres in Dhammānupassanāsatipaṭṭhāna with the detailed explanation step by step from rough to profound in 8 steps; 1) perception of forest, 2) perception on earth, 3) sphere of infinity of space, 4) sphere of infinity of consciousness, 5) sphere of nothingness, 6) sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, 7) perception on mental concentration without sing, 8) observing the impermanence of mental meditation. After that, practitioner starts observing 5 aggregates and sense spheres as impermanence, non-self and emptiness until mind liberates from all sensual influx, existence influx, ignorance influx. This is the way to enter the true emptiness, unchangeable and pure state. The meditation practice in Cuḷa-suññata Sutta results the entering the be born in heaven, form being and formless existence. If practitioner who can follows insight meditation, will gain realization attaining noble path, fruits and Nibbana.
