Abstract
This research paper aims at 2 objectives; 1) to study of Buddhist doctrine in Ajjhattanicca Sutta, 2) to study insight meditation practice in Ajjhattanicca Sutta. The data had been collected from Theravada Buddhist scriptures; Tipitaka, commentaries, sub-commentaries and other concerned texts, then compiled in descriptive style, finally examined by experts. The research findings were that;
Ajjhattanicca Sutta was the teaching delivered by Buddha to his disciples. The significant principle is to determine the true state of sense-spheres, i.e. eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and mentality, they all fall into three common characteristics; impermanence, suffering and non-self. These sense-spheres show the sign of three characteristics all times appearing at beginning and disappearing at the end because they depend on temporary factors and the results became impermanent as well. The consciousness functions through these sense-spheres which also are impermanent by its nature. Manners of three common characteristics; rise and fall, affliction and no essence can be included in four noble truth, dependent origination and so on.
The insight practice found in Ajjhattanicca Sutta follows the four foundations of mindfulness; contemplation on body, feeling, mind and mental objects in order to enlighten mind to realize what is happening to it until attaining insight knowledge seeing continuity which hides the impermanence, deportment hides sufferings, and solid perception hides non-self. All these domains hide seeing name and forms which rise, remain and fall every moment. With endless efforts and being mindful, one will realize that all sense-spheres are impermanent, suffering and non-self. In practical aspect, when seeing impermanence, one sees suffering and non-self, when seeing suffering one sees impermanence and non-self, when seeing non-self, one sees impermanence and suffering because the three common characteristics appear without separation and being the manners of absolute truth. His mind will liberate from delusion, attachment and defilements due to attaining noble path and fruit knowledge respectively.
