Abstract

Abstract

             This research paper had following objectives: to study of the mental state of greed or Lobhacetasika and to study Lobhacetasika for insight meditation practice. The research data had been collected from original sources of Theravada Buddhist texts. i.e. Tipitaka, its commentaries. sub-commentaries. Saddavisesapakarana texts and other related documents, then compiled in descriptive style, finally examined by experts.

 

                 The research findings were that Lobhacetasika is the state of unwholesome consciousness with greed. There are eight Lobhacetasikas consisting of eight greed unwholesome consciousness which is unwholesome having greed root as its domain, It fixes mind intolonging, desiring with strong degree it may lead to wrong deeds. It causes the endless craving to sensual pleasure. It also forces mind to attach mental objects as its character having addicted as its function, causing the sufferings, resulting the fervid passion due to lusts. That is to say, greed causes suffering in origin of suffering. Only one Lobha can bring a lot of suffering in both of physical and mental side. The state of Lobha is the holding desired objects for attachment. In various discourses, Lobha includes desire for sensual pleasure, existence and non-existence, grudging as the tight robe bonding an aninmal being pulled wherever the owner wishes. This Lobhacetasika leads to be born in loss and woe because it attaches and influxes to the happening mental objects.

            In insight meditation, the practitioner must understand Lobhacetasika resulting the bad deeds of unconsciousness which can be overcome by following the Three Trainings; morality, meditation and  wisdom  then observing insight objects by knowing Lobhacetasika like intoxication or drug causing illusion or river overwhelming mind all times. After that he cultivates mindfulness and awareness observing the mental acts according to Contemplation on mind, i.e. whenever the mind is formed by Lobha or lust. One would see three characteristics and cultivating faculties and bending the mind to the way of insight knowledge. With strengthened and powerful mind with endless efforts on insight meditation. He can complete attaining noble path, fruits because of realizing four noble truths. Suffering, origin of suffering, origin of suffering, extinction of suffering and the path leading to extinction of suffering entering to the end of suffering or Nibbana in final.
