Absract
The thesis has three objectives, they are, 1) to study the theory of life development 2) to study 4 Iddhipãda and life development in Theravãda Buddhism and 3) to analyze life development with 4 Iddhipãda as found in MahãjanakaJãtaka.
The study is found that
1. For life development in Buddhism, the Buddha encourages his disciples to develop their lives as following, (1) bodily development is to behave properly, not to indulgent in bad action, behaving in only proper way. (2) social development is to behave according to the rules or discipline or Sĩla which will help prevent one from doing bad (3) mental development is to keep mind in concentrate condition (4) wisdom development is to train mind to aware the truth of things. These 4 kinds of development will result in happiness that is termed as Nibbãna
2. For maintaining the good life and to lead the life to the aim, The Buddha has designed the 4 Iddhipãda, by which any one can apply in life. The four are (1) Chanda working with whole heart, (2) Viriya working with full-scream effort, (3) Citta working with intention and (4) Vimamsã working with wisdom. With these virtues, one can reach what one wish.
3. Mahãjanaka has been developed his life with application 4 Iddhipãda in life as following, (1) he develop Chanda by having satisfied with his birth, (ksatriya rank) (2) He develop Viriya by having effort to regain his father's kingship and deciding to make a sea voyage to sell goods but faces with bad luck caused by boat sank, causing him swim for 7 days. Then one goddess comes out to help. (3) He develop Citta by having single-mind swim amid the sea without lost the heart. (4) He develop Vimamsã with critical thinking, using wisdom in every moment of life even in time of crisis, causing Sivalĩ accepting him and finally he regain the kingship as wish.
