Abstract
The title of research is “The Application of Khanti Princeples for Alcoholic Drinkking Solutions of People in Tatthong Sun-District, Sithat District, Udonthani Province”. The objectives of the study was 1) To examine the teaching of toleration in Theravada Buddhist scripture. 2) To examine situation and problem of alcoholic of people in the area Tatthong sub-district, Sri Tarth district, Udonthani province. 3) To examine the adaptation of applying the teaching of toleration in addressing the problem of alcoholic for people in the area Tatthong sub-district, Sri Tarth district, Udonthani province. This research is qualitative research that has collected information from a sample group of monks, average people, and scholars in Thard tong sub-district for 25 monks/people by using a depth interview.
The result of the research :
“Kan Thi” literally means toleration, having a capacity to contain an unlikely emotion physically and mentally that has been stimulated by unsatisfied things, which always lead to an inappropriate reaction. It also refers to the toleration over defilements in order to attain wholesomeness. As a result, those who follow the teaching are being loved by people. They would be able to refrain from producing harmful intention and danger, they are be kind to everyone, and be very composed when facing with death and certainly dwelling in enlightened land (pure land). Additionally, toleration is considered an ethic that plays a vital part in attaining the highest goal or ultimate goal of Buddhism. Therefore, toleration is the Buddhist teaching that entails benefit to practitioner at the level of worldly things to ascetics
The problem of people in the area of Tatthong sub-district, Sri Tarth district, Udonthani province caused by heavily drinking alcohol is traced back long time ago. Earlier, we can say that alcohol is a part of local ritual, but later on, the consumption of alcohol has been added to other festival and some special occasion. Furthermore, alcohol is considered rite of passage; tanagers will drink alcohol as to represent themselves as a grown man. For the normal people in working class, they use alcohol as an image in social class. As for women, they drink alcohol to show that they are as good as men.
The Buddhist teaching that can be used in tackling alcoholic problem is consisting of toleration; it is the teaching that is a vital solution to tackling with the problem of alcoholic of people in the area of Tatthong sub-district. The underlying reason that people are so addicted to alcohol is because they lack of toleration, they are uncontrollable to their needs which forced by defilement.
Therefore, we should and have to be tolerated with hardship, suffering, pain, the force of defilement which will lead to consumption of alcohol.
