ABSTRACT
The objectives of this research were (1) to study the history of the grilled sticky rice festival (Bun Khawjee) in the third lunar month of the North-eastern people, (2) to study the grilled sticky rice festival (Bun Khawjee) of people in TepKhiri sub-district, Na Wang district, NongbuaLamphu province, and (3) to study the belief and value on the grilled sticky rice festival (Bun Khawjee) of people in TepKhiri sub-district, Na Wang district, NongbuaLamphu province. This documentary research was the analytic study of qualitative data, conducted by in-depth interview of key informants. The data were analyzed, synthesized, and made the conclusion, as well as the study results were finally presented.
The research findings were as follows
The main reason of the grilled sticky rice festival (Bun Khawjee) in the third lunar month for the North-eastern people was found that villagers were free from rice farming and kept the new paddy harvest in the barns; therefore, they needed merit-making to offer the monks grilled sticky rice. Understanding the good result of merit-making by offering grilled sticky rice to the monks, the North-eastern people successively made and offered the monks grilled sticky rice during the third lunar month from their ancestor’s perioduntil now.
The history of the grilled sticky rice festival (Bun Khawjee) of people in TepKhiri sub-district, Na Wang district, NongbuaLamphu province was found that this festival was restored by those people under the development strategies of cultural traditions and local wisdom. Traditionally, the festivalwas successively organized every year in the purpose of the cultural conservation of the North-eastern.
For the belief and value of the grilled sticky rice festival (Bun Khawjee) towards the ways of living of the North-eastern and the people in TepKhiri sub-district, Na Wang district, NongbuaLamphu province, it was found that they believed merit-making was collection of merits. In terms of those people’s belief onthe grilled sticky rice festival (Bun Khawjee), the grilled sticky rice was offered to the monks in order to worship the Buddha on Magha Puja Day in the middle of the third lunar month. Also, this festival gave rise to values in various fields: people’s mind, harmony of the community’s people, ways of living in the community, religion and culture, and economics.
