ABSTRACT

 

           The present study aimed at 1) studying roles of morality teaching monks toward development of school children’s ethics in primary school Bangkholeam District, Bangkok; 2) comparative studying level of students’ opinions toward development of school children’s ethics in primary school Bangkholeam District, Bangkok; and 3) studying problems and obstacles, as well as recommendations on roles of morality teaching monks in development of school children’s ethics in primary school Bangkholeam District, Bangkok. This present study employed a Mixed Method with both Quantitative, with a survey, and qualitative research methodologies. The study sample consisted of 312 out of 1,414 school children studying in primary school classes 4–6. The subjects were recruited based on the sample size of Taro Yamane. The instrument used in data collection was a questionnaire. The data were analyzed in terms of Frequency, Percentage, Mean and Standard Deviation. Inferential statistic of t-test was used to determine the differences in mean scores of both groups, and One Way ANOVA was used to determine the differences in mean scores among three groups or more. Finally, the Least Significant Difference (LSD) was employed to test the differences between means of each pair. As for qualitative methodology, in-depth interviews were used with key Informants, and data were analyzed by means of content analysis.

           The study findings revealed that

           1. The overall opinions of students towards roles of morality teaching monks toward development of school children’s ethics in primary school Bangkorlaem District, Bangkok was at the great level ( = 3.92). When considering each aspect, it was found that the opinions toward all aspects were at great levels –Teaching Process (=4.13), Curriculum’s Extra Activities (=4.06), Measurement and Evaluation of learning (=3.81), and Teaching Media (=3.71).

 

           2. When comparing the opinions of students relating the roles of morality teaching monks toward development of school children’s ethics in primary school Bangkholeam District, Bangkok, it was found that student with different personal factors: school, gender, age, and class had no different opinions toward roles of morality teaching monks toward development of school children’s ethics in primary school Bangkholeam District, Bangkok with statistical significance at 0.05 level, denying the formulated hypothesis.

          3. As regards problems and obstacles, as well as recommendations on development of school children’s ethics in primary school Bangkholeam District, Bangkok, it is recommended that in the teaching process: teacher should be a key to access learning activities over a wide range, and coordinate with Sangha in some that teachers unable to teach students as it should be ideal because of the extra instruction and some kind of event rely on Sangha who cooperated and provided some advice. In teaching media: teacher should prepare teaching materials and teaching equipment and a variety of different techniques by using psychological teaching, because Sangha has taught only once a week or twice only. In extra - activities of curriculum: the Sangha could help school with morals and ethics, and stimulate students to understand Dhamma and apply in daily life. Finally, in measurement and evaluation: in Buddhist teaching, there should be pre-telling main points for students in order to prepare for the test. And also there should be of cooperation with school in order to measure and evaluate with conforming to curriculum and be full of effectiveness of evaluation
