Abstract
This thesis entitled ‘An Analytical Study of the Mural Paintings in Jundho Hall at Wat Pa Phuritatapatipataram’ has three objectives: 1) to study the principles of Buddhism and fine art in Buddhism, 2) to study the mural paintings in Jundho Hall at the Wat Pa Phuritatapatipataram, and 3) to analyze the Buddhist principles related to the mural paintings in Jundho Hall at Wat Pa Phuritatapatipataram. This is a qualitative research done by in-depth interview of the workers of the mural paintings in the Jundho Hall at Wat Pa Phuritatapatipataram.
The research findings were found as follows: 1) there are Dhamma and Fine art in Buddhism including the Buddha's storytelling. The mural painting told us about the story of the Buddha for glorying and sustaining of Buddhism. Therefore, this hall was the beautiful, valuable and interesting place, 2) the mural paintings were made in focusing on the painting motivating people who are interested in Buddhist art and Buddha's teachings, 3) there are Buddha's teachings on each mural painting and, also, there are several relations with the way of life, for example, the man who makes the good deeds, then, such a man gets the good results. He, also, make the happiness and divine way by himself. The man who makes the bad deeds, then, he creates the suffering and to go to the hell by himself.
The mural paintings are the Vajrayãna Buddhist arts. But the plot of the story is the Theravada Buddhist style. Nevertheless the artists were aimed to paint the characters on the mural painting as Vajrayãna Buddhist style so as to make the stories which have the harmonization between Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism. These mural paintings were painted by the painters from Nepal. In those paintings, all of the existing contents are the ways of practicing for the cessation of suffering.
