Abstract
This thesis entitled ‘An Analytical Study of Patirúpadesavása in The scripture of Theravada Buddism’ has three objectives: 1) to study the concept of Patirúpadesavása in Theravada Buddhist scriptures, 2) to study Dhamma supporting the living in Patirúpadesavása a, and 3) to study the application of Patirúpadesavása. This is a documentary research.
In the study, it was found that according to Buddhist scriptures, Patirúpadesavása basically means the appropriate place wherein the residence should be put so that it can provide some benefit to man while living in there and by virtue of that it also can give rise to the successfulness of various activities; it becomes a good place possessing supportive environment yielding hefty of healthiness to both body and mind whereby certain prosperity and progress can be possibly made by one who lives in that place.
As far as Patirúpadesavása is concerned, the supporting Dhammas are of the following ones: four virtues conducive to benefits in the present, four virtues of household life, four bases of accomplishment, moral shame and moral dread and Eightfold path, for instance.
On the study the application of Patirúpadesavása, it was found that when one lives in the suitable place then one studies the Buddha’s teachings and after that one properly follows those virtues and by means of that one is supported by Dhammas in doing good action which would bring one the highest benefit. Under these circumstances, the mentioned man needs to get himself/herself bodily, verbally and mentally trained. With the help of those virtues, he/she can get real understanding of things through wisdom. Consequently, his/her life will be gradually developed becoming suitable for living in such Patirúpadesavása respectively.
