Abstract
This research is aimed to 1) study roles of the community leaders towards settlement of disagreement of people in Pa Phlu Sub-district, Ban Hong District, Lamphun Province; 2) study conditions of problems and volume of disagreement of people; 3) study and compare roles of community leaders based on four principles virtuous existence towards settlement of disagreement of people; 4) study pattern of applying the four principles virtuous existence in Buddhism in settlement of disagreement of people. The research was conducted using mixed method. Population used in this research is people of Pa Phlu Sub-district, totaling 375 people. Data was collected using questionnaire and interview form. The data collected from the questionnaire was analyzed using package software for social science research to determine frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. And the hypothesis test was done using t-test and f-test with one-way analysis of variance. When it was found that there was difference, a test was conducted using a method of Least Significant Difference. For the information from interview, the researcher grouped the information according to essence of issue of interview, and then performed content analysis.
The research result revealed that
People of Pa Phlu Sub-district, in overview, had opinion towards the roles of community leaders in settlement of disagreement based on four principles virtuous existence at high level. Upon consideration on each area of the roles, it was found that the area of information, benefit, value or popularity, structure and relation were at high level. And upon consideration on the roles of the leader based on four principles virtuous existence, it was found that loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity were at high level
In comparison of roles of community leaders in settlement of disagreement based on four principles virtuous existence of people of Pa Phlu Sub-district, the hypothesis test by analyzing the differences based on individual factors was found that the means on age factor were not different. So, the hypothesis is rejected. For the factors of gender, status, educational level, and income, the means were different with statistically significance at level 0.01. So, the hypothesis is accepted.
The study result revealed that the disagreement on careering and problem of personal disagreement with neighbors still was the ones that could not be solved much since each had disagreement of opinion on some topic. Recommendation is to promote gathering to settle disagreement on careering and other issues requiring cooperation from all sectors to settle the existing disagreement and prevent the potential disagreement in the future.
The qualitative study result revealed that applying the principles of Buddhism to encourage roles of the community leaders towards settlement of disagreement of people needs personal relationship and many methods together. Those who will settle the disagreement have to learn and practice skill and techniques, as well as strategies in settlement of disagreement so that the existing disagreement shall stimulate to bring about creative solution, based on equal feeling and interest of all parties, ready to solve the problem and willing to open the door of creation.
