Abstract
The objectives of this thematic paper are 1) to study the basic method of Dhamma Medicine in Buddhism and 2) to do an analysis study of the treatment that applied Dhamma Medicine in Buddhism. This research was conducted based on Documentary Research Methodology, acquiring data from the Pali Canon, academic paper, related documents and concluded with analysis approach.
The result of the study found that Dhamma Medicine was the teachings of the Buddha that focused on the practical ways to keep both mental and physical healthy. In fact, they were the doctrines that intended the practitioners to be mindful and be present with what going on around. It was the method of letting go attachment (upadana), understanding the reality of the universe and eventually the path leading to liberation or nibbana. The Dhamma Medicine as depicted in the Pali Canon were: Satipatthana (the four foundation of mindfulness), Iddhipada (path of accomplishment), Bojjhanga (seven enlighten factors), Atthangika-magga (the noble eightfold path), Samadhi (concentration), Sañña (ten perceptions), Tilakkhana (the three characteristic of the things), Brahmavihara (the four sublime states), and that of Triple Gem.
Evidentially, the Buddha implemented the Dhamma Medicine to heal himself; while his disciples the Monastic Order and lay disciples had been treated by listening to the Buddha teachings and wholeheartedly penetrated to the doctrines he expounded. However, it was not possible for the Dhamma Medicine to heal all kinds of illness especially for serious cases. More importantly, the successfulness of Dhamma Medicine was depending on the practitioners. For the noble Bhikkhu (Ariya Sangha) were discovered at the end of the Buddha explanation some were discovered the day after and some were moth after. In the Thai society there were Venerable Buddhadadassa Bhikkhu, Venerable Huang Por Cha Subhatto, and Phrapomkunaporn that implemented the Dhamma Medicine for healing themselves. Nevertheless, the most essential principles of the Dhamma Medicine were not to committee all evil actions, to do what were good, purified one mind. Thus, the Dhamma Medicine was the principles that not only lead to safe discovered but also lead to the discovered of falling into the cycle of mass sufferings that was nibbana or liberation.
