Abstract
This thesis had three objectives; to study Pīti in the Theravāda Buddhist scripture, 2) to study the Insight Meditation Practice in Theravāda Buddhist Scripture, 3) to study the cause of the rising and falling of Pīti in the Insight Meditation Practice. Clarified data are taken from the Theravada Buddhist scriptures and other related documents, then composed, summarized, analyzed, explained in details, corrected and verified by Buddhist scholars. From the study it found that;
The term Pīti in Theravada Buddhism means joy, delight or rapture, which is the result of practicing meditation. It is in Vinaya Piṭaka, Pārājika Kaṇḍa concerning that the development of Ânāpānasati: Mindfulness on breathing, Verañja Kaṇḍa Mahāvagga, Campeyya Khandhaka, Abhidhammavaggādikammakathā, Adhigamasaddhammapaṭirūpa, and Pariyattisaddhammapaṭirūpa. It is in Suttanta Piṭaka concerning in Brahmajālasutta, Samaññaphalasutta, Poṭṭhapādasutta, Janavanasabhasutta. It is in Abhidhamma Piṭaka concerning in Mahāpaṭṭhāna Pītitatika, in Paṭisandhikhaṇakhandha, Dhammasaṅganīnikkhepakaṇḍa and in Atthakathā Atthasālinī, there are the ways of reaching for practicing meditation.
The practicing Insight Meditation is in the four Foundations of Mindfulness; Kāyānupassanā, Vedanānupassanā, Cittānupassanā, Dhammānupassanā, when a meditator practice in the right, his mind also will be developed and grow up. This is only path for the purification of beings, for the overpowering of sorrow and lamentation, for getting the wisdom and understanding the four Noble Truths, for the attainment in advanced.
Pīti is one of imperfections. The cuase of Pīti is calmness or peace which is the natural condition happening by faith, if the concentration is too much, the effort is less. The cause of falling of Pīti is trained by Dhamma, consideration by wisdom and practicing Insight Meditation observed that Pīti has appeared; it is not permanent and it is disappeared,
