Abstract

This thesis has three objectives: to study Khanti (Patience) and Soracca (Modesty) in the Theravāda Buddhist Scriptures, to study the Dhamma related to Khanti and Soracca and to study how Khanti and Soracca can be applied in daily life. Clarified and analyzed data are taken from the Theravāda Buddhist scriptures namely, the Tipitaka, Buddhist commentaries, Tīga, and other related scriptures such as the Visuddimagga then composed, explained in details, corrected and verified by Buddhist scholars.

The study found that Khanti in the Palī language can be written and presented in 4 different forms.  Its overall meaning is patience; forbearance; tolerance; endurance, non-ferociousness, non-malice and good spirit. The Dhamma taught about Khanti in the Theravāda Buddhist Scriptures refer to the power in which one possesses to tolerate unfavorable environment conditions. The said conditions can be classified into  (1) endurance with troubles which are difficulties caused by the nature (2) endurance with sufferings, which caused by conditioned things (3) endurance with resentment, which caused by others’ sharp-tongued and (4) endurance with the power of defilements and provocation or arousal in both body and mind. Soracca means gentleness; refinement; graciousness, meticulousness and/or modest.

There are several Dhamma concerning and supporting Khanti and Soracca, some directly and some in a supportive way so that practitioners reach their goals. Khanti is one amongst the Maṅgala or 38 blessings so any who could regularly practice this Dhamma would be blessed. The study also found that Khanti is beneficial in suppressing or relieving anger, which can be followed by loving-kindness meditation practice.

In applying Khanti and Soracca in daily life, the study found that these are the virtues sustaining one’s mind from being discouraged when one is in troubles. Khanti and Soracca will teach one to learn how to be patient and not irritated so one can fight and overcome all defilements. There is a Buddhist verse saying that ‘Patience and restrain are austerity’. Khanti is the act of body and speech suppression while Soracca is the act of mind suppression. It can be said that Soracca is grace, which will make practitioner a beautiful person in all his body, speech and mind.
