Abstract
This thesis has three objectives: to study the dhamma taught in Vitakkasanthana Sutta, to study the way of Samathapuppamkama Vipassana practice, and to study how insight meditation is practiced in Vitakkasanthana Sutta. Clarified and analyzed data are taken from the Theravāda Buddhist scriptures namely, the Tipitaka, Buddhist commentaries, Tiga, academic texts and other related scriptures such as the Visuddhimagga then composed, explained in details, corrected and verified by Buddhist scholars.
The study found that Vitakkasanthana Sutta was collected and compiled by Dhammasangāhaka Thera (the comilers of the scriptures). It is a verse appeared in the Majjhimanikāya (Collection of Middle-length Discourses) and contains the very important teachings about method of considering five Nimittas to arise expertise in the way of Vitakka that is to wish to determine any Vitakka, determine that, by this way, it can be to escape suffering and sadness. Thus, to abandon determined effort (Mana) is the only path that can lead all beings out of sufferings.
The Insight meditation is the method for mind-training so that practitioners gain the wisdom to understand thoroughly the Rūpa and Nāma as their bases until one can see the Three Characteristics of the impermanence, suffering and not self. In Vipassana pactice, Samathapuppangkama means Vipassana meditation practice by using forty of the mood of Samatha meditation that can make the mind to become Jhanas and use that to enter Vipassana meditation practice then make wisdom.
From the studying principle of Dhamma that related with Vipassana training in Anumānasutta, it is found that it contains the very important teachings about Vipassanabhavāna practice by showing Athi-citta including eight Samabat that is the basic of Vipassana, the way to consider five appeared Nimits and developing until the expert in the way of Vitakka which leads practitioners to cut Tanha and release Samyojana then go to Nibbāna.
