Abstract
The thesis entitled ‘The Concept of David Hume’s Causation and the Dependent Origination in Theravãda Buddhist Philosophy’ has three objectives: 1) to study David Hume’s concept of causation, 2) to study theory of dependent origination in Theravãda Buddhist philosophy, and 3) to critically analyze David Hume’s concept of causation and theory of dependent origination in Theravãda Buddhist philosophy. This is a qualitative research.
In the study of first objective, it showed that according to Hume’s viewpoint, the causation means a thing always happened after another thing. By virtue of this, Hume denied the existence of causation because man can never observed the necessary connection between things, just only the continuation of phenomena. According to Hume’s view, the necessary connection and causation are merely made by human being’s imagination through the causal inference. In the study of second objective, it was found that according to Theravãda Buddhist Philosophical viewpoint, the causation basically refers to things conditioned to arise, remain and cease endlessly. Theravãda Buddhist Philosophy basically ascribed things to these processes. The necessary connection and causation have been strongly held by dependent origination theory by virtue of the reason that when there is the same causation then there is the same effect. The metaphysical concept of the first mover or God has been obviously denied by Buddhism. In the study of third objective, it showed that there is a difference between Theravãda Buddhist philosophy and Hume with respect to the concept of causation. On the one hand, Hume denied this concept; on the other hand, it has been refuted by Buddhism. It is reasoned that the inability to observe the necessary connection of things or to experience the cause of power giving rise to any effect does not mean that there is no real necessary connection or any power; certainly it is. In order to explain this, the theory of dependent origination has been purposely utilized. However, Hume disagreed with this explanation of dependent origination theory. According to Hume’s view, the observation of dependent origination theory can never be made. What are being observed are the only 12 links, that being conditionally and continuously caused to arise. This is also made by human being’s imagination.
In This research, the researcher is of the view that the theory of dependent origination is more reasonable that the Hume’s concept of causation because its meaning causal aspect, necessary connection between cause and effect and nature of causation can be explained by dependent origination theory in more profound sense that Hume’s concept of causation.
