Abstract
This research, “An Analytical Study of Jean – Francois Lyotard’s Differend: A Case Study of Beauty in Philosophy of Contemporary Art”, has 3 objectives:
1. To study the concept of Jean – Francois Lyotard’s Differend. 2. To study the concept of Beauty in Philosophy of Contemporary Art. 3. To analysis the concept of Jean – Francois Lyotard’s Differend on the concept of Beauty in Philosophy of Contemporary Art. This research is a qualitative research.
From the study, regarding the first objective, it is found that the concept of Lyotard’s Differend, referring to the argument of difference with the incommensurable, reject the monopoly of reasoning and scientific knowledge. Including universal values. But presents value like a phrase that is a small unit and an individuals such as the aesthetic value. Regarding the second objective it is found that the concept of beauty in the philosophy of contemporary art rejects the meaning of the traditional art that is the end of rules in art. The concept of beauty is borderless, but given the diversity, the freedom and liberty in art expression, and give meaning to more individualistic values rather than the universal. Regarding the third objective it is found that Contemporary art presents the idea such as the critical of
Ai Weiwei, in the sense of refusing the traditional concepts of beauty, by giving the artworks that criticize and question the cultural changes of China in the modern era. A Diversity of Kara Walker, by offering an open space such a Little narrative like the bias about skin color and racial prejudice in the American society. Including the new meaning of Olafur Eliasson, by simulating the nature for the work of art, which allows the space of art interaction to the audience and the feeling of beauty through the individual aesthetic experience.
From the analysis of the problem; the researcher supports the concept of Lyotard’s Differend. The focus is on artistic expression which opens the space of incomprehensibly perception and the limitations of language process. Art is like phrase or small units that can convey a sense of humanity through the aesthetic value of the individual, not social criteria. The concept of Lyotard’s Differend awakens us to challenge and reject the single rule, social space that is not open to minorities, by not accepting the monopoly criteria.
